SpaceX is pushing the boundaries of internet connectivity with its Starlink satellite service by testing autonomous drone ships as ground stations. The plan, detailed in an application to the FCC, involves operating up to twelve earth stations on drone ships in U.S. territorial waters, with each vessel hosting no more than four stations. The experiment, utilizing Ka-band frequencies, seeks to evaluate the stations’ effectiveness in maritime settings and support Starlink Maritime service, which already serves over 10,000 vessels worldwide.
